Last night, I had an unpleasant dream. Not sure if you have the conscious ability to wake yourself up, but I had had enough and pulled the plug on this dreamscape. I got up to go to the bathroom, then returned to bed determined not to return to the unpleasant scenes my brain had been playing for me. The problem is my brain then refused to go back to sleep. It was 5:30 am and nowhere near time for me to get up.
Too bad you don’t like my subconscious dreams. How about you deal with your conscious brain instead!
Great, I thought as I flip-flopped for the next two hours. So no dreams of flailing down white water minus a life jacket and watching my daughter suffering the same fate just out of arms reach. Instead, my brain decided to think about money or the lack thereof in my pocket-book.
Post-secondary school is just around the corner. It’s pretty expensive you know. How are you going to pay for that for two kids?
“I’ll write some articles; query a magazine or two to drum up some freelance work,” I pep talked myself in the hopes it would lessen my stressors and lull me back to sleep.
Oh ya? Which ones? You know there are hundreds of magazines out there. What are you going to write about? What original thoughts can you bring to the table?
“Umm, well… ”
You don’t need to know the rest of the negative think talk my brain shot at my in the pre-dawn hours. I know I can easily fill my hours, but my subconscious apparently takes note of how many of those hours are paid and how many given to volunteer endeavours. I am always in need of a few more paid gigs and don’t need the early morning reminder of that. Maybe this was my brain’s way of saying I should worry a little more about it though.
Ya, ya, ya. Money. I get it. It isn’t the be all and end all, but it pays the bills.
I call myself a Freelance Writer, but Social Media Strategist is more accurate most days. I must admit that I don’t often query too many magazines, just for the fear of not knowing where to start. Social Media Management is an admirable job; not to mention a sought after skill. Reaching a client base is the key though. If my potential clients are not social media savvy, then how do they find me online? And is it perhaps time that I found them in real-time versus letting my brain run roughshod over me in my dreams?
I am not drowning and losing my children to inertia, but maybe I could use a little prod. Time to grab your life jacket girlfriend. You can do this. Dig in! Let’s go get ’em.
